Etiology: EC was involved in a motor vehicle accident as a result of hitting a tree head on. EC was taken to Maine Medical Center and treated for a severe closed head injury with open comminuted right front temporal skull fracture, increased intracranial pressure, diecephalic seizures, pneumonia, damaged left quadriceps tendons and small knee joint effusion.

Behavioral Issues: Inappropriate outbursts and anger in public; Impulsive behaviors around men.

Other Factors: Nonfunctional oral communication skills; EC required assistance to complete most tasks of daily living skills; Communication devices needs to be reevaluated for efficiency and new devices to be implemented; Reintegration into high school; Difficulty ambulating on uneven terrain

Expected Outcome: EC will be able to function independently within her home and community environments with improved communication skills and adaptive devices. She will reenter the academic setting, with the goal of graduating high school.

Services provided by NCIL: NCIL to provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language therapy and residential supports nine hours a day, five days a week. EC to be followed weekly by psychiatry and counseling.
* Physical therapy to address hemiparesis, tone and ambulation issues.
* Speech therapy to address the need for a more advanced communication device, explore verbal communications strengths and barriers and ongoing swallowing issues.
* Occupational therapy to address upper extremities deficits and to improve upon ADL skills.
* The team worked on compensatory skills for successful school reentry via use of a dayminder, and a tape recorder for note taking.
* Counseling for sexuality issues and grieving loss of "old self." |
Current Status: EC was able to remain home throughout her home based rehabilitation program provided by North Country Independent Living. EC now utilizes a light writer for communication and was able to successfully complete high school. She is a graduate of Fryeburg Academy and now has higher scholastic aspirations and is taking a few college level courses. She continues to live at home with her family and participate in a day treatment program in the Greater Portland area. Her new goal is to live independently in her own apartment. Her fathers has recently reported that EC is working competitively on a part-time basis. She has also been scheduled to meet with the Department of Motor Vehicles to be tested for operating her own vehicle. EC's father reports that she is happy and beginning to establish a life of her own.
